Spring 2010 Newsletter.

Hi again.

Spring is supposed to be officially here although I think the weather has forgotten that fact and it has gone quite wintry once again. I now stock the ‘ CAM ' lifestyle magazine and the ‘Aura' magazine. If anyone would like free copies of these on a regular basis please don't hesitate to contact me.

My focus for this newsletter is on healthy weight loss. I have decided to run a series of healthy weight loss workshops as I have been shocked at what I've learnt from talking to various girls about some of the diets they have been on and their stories.

I talked to someone recently who has been on the Cambridge diet several times. I was horrified to find out that all she was consuming was three shakes per day instead of food. She assured me that they contained all the vitamins and minerals your body needs for balanced nutrition so this was thought of as being a healthy way to lose weight. Each shake only contained about 175 calories which meant that all she was consuming was around 500 calories per day! I'm not surprised that she managed to lose weight on this regime as she was basically half starving herself. She said that she felt so bad sometimes that she would have to pull over when she was driving because she felt so faint. Most interestingly though every time she has done the diet she has put even more weight back on.

I explained that the reason for this was that if you reduce your intake of food for as little as 5-6 hours that your body goes into what we call ‘famine mode'. It thinks that there is a shortage of food and so to make the most use of what little food is available it slows down its metabolism. This means that you will be burning energy more slowly. Once you start consuming your ‘normal' diet again you will start to put the weight back on and more as you will not been burning up as much energy because your metabolism is still low for a while. It seems to be much harder to raise your metabolism again than it is to lower it. Every time you do this it seems to get harder to raise your metabolism again so the effects are worse each time.

You are also sending the message to your brain that it needs to stock up on fat when there is plenty of food around for times when food is short. This is why some people cannot stop themselves from eating once they start because their cravings are so strong. You need to change the message that you are sending to your brain. You need to assure your body that there is plenty of food available and there is no need to hang on to fat reserves for times of famine. By eating little and often you will help to keep your metabolism raised therefore burning energy more efficiently helping to keep weight down.

I do not advocate dieting and strongly believe that you can lose weight by eating foods that suit you and help to keep your metabolism raised. A lot of diets focus on low fat or no fat. What they do not realise is that they need some fats in their diets. The trick is choosing the right fats as it is the healthy fats that help to keep your metabolism raised. This includes oily fish, nuts and seeds. They do not make you put on weight as is the popular belief amongst many dieters.

From talking to these various girls about weight loss and the issues surrounding dieting, I decided to run a series of workshops on healthy weight loss as I felt there was a great need for this. My workshop is called – Why can't I lose weight? In this workshop we will discuss the issues surrounding weight loss and some of the most common factors that keep cropping up in the clients that I see at my practise for weight loss.

I will also be introducing my healthy weight loss programme. This is a ten week programme where I will take 5 group sessions of one hour every other week where I will focus on a different aspect of healthy weight loss each time whilst also setting you all easily achievable tasks each time and providing on going support where needed.

I have currently got 2 spaces left on my healthy weight loss programme that I am running in the Lampeter area so if anyone is interested please contact me. I am offering this at a special one off price of only £25 for the ten week programme.
