I have just come back from visiting the Natural Health show in Brighton and thought that this would be a good time to write down some of my thoughts after my trip away and keep you up to date with what I’m doing.
I attended some of the lectures that were on over the weekend, as it is important that I keep up to date with new information that is available. I always find them very interesting and motivating anyway. Nutrition is an ever changing profession as there are always new thoughts and ideas coming to the forefront as a result of new research that is on-going all the time, which brings with it new findings. The body is such a complex machine that we are learning new things about the way it communicates all the time.
The lecture that I enjoyed the most was by Dr. Mark Atkinson about the mind body connection and what a profound effect our emotional health has on our physical health and how our emotions interact with our body. It just confirmed to me what I had already learnt on the subject but also gave me ideas on how to implement this better in my consultations. This is part of the holistic approach to health as we need to look at our physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs in order to obtain optimum health. It is not enough to eat healthily. If you are neglecting your emotional needs then this will still be having a profound effect on your health.
‘One of the reasons that we are seeing more functional illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, attention deficit disorder and post traumatic stress disorder is that we are not living our lives the way we were genetically designed to do so. We are still programmed to eat fresh produce, keep physically active and be socially connected through community orientated living. This is a far cry from today’s reality of nutrient depleted processed diets, physical inactivity, social isolation, increased levels of stress, sleep deprivation, high job anxiety, resistant microbes and electromagnetic pollution. The Fact is that our social, chemical, physical, emotional and psychological environment has changed so dramatically that many people are simply failing to cope.
’The Mind body bible by Dr. Mark Atkinson
I would recommend this book to all those of you wanting to explore your own health issues, particularly concerning the effects that your emotional welfare can have on your health. You will learn some new skills enabling you to cope with these better, which will then empower you to be able to do something positive for yourself, improving your own health.
I have found this book helpful to me personally, whilst also enabling me to understand my clients needs on a more holistic level which I hope will come through in my future consultations.
Healthy weight loss
I am always being asked about the best way to lose weight safely and healthily as many diets often cut out foods that are essential to good health. This needs to be done in such a way that you will be able to sustain your weight loss for the long term, instead of continually going on diets of one form or another only to put even more weight back on once you stop dieting. This happens because you have caused your metabolism to slow down causing a yo- yo effect and leaving you in a worse place than if you hadn’t dieted at all.
Understanding why this happens and acknowledging that we are all different, needing different types of fuel will help you understand why diets don’t work for many people. We all burn our foods in different ways according to our metabolic type. Depending on your metabolic type you will find that certain food groups suit your particular type and once you start giving your body the right fuel you will find that this helps you to lose weight naturally.
I am currently offering my clients the opportunity to find out how you can lose weight effectively and explore some of the other reasons why you may not be able to lose weight easily and things you can do to improve this situation.
If you would like to get 4 or 5 friends together and share the cost I will come and talk to you about ways to lose weight effectively in a healthy way for the long term and help you to identify what your individual metabolic types are. You will then know what foods will suit you and why these will make you feel better. I will also explore with you other reasons you may be finding it difficult to lose weight.
I am only charging £25 per session for this service as a special offer for April. This can be shared with a few of your friends so that it will only cost you about five pounds each. I would like to keep the groups to five or six maximum so that you all get some benefit from it.
If you would like to explore this personally in more depth then maybe you would prefer to have a one to one consultation which I am also happy to do.

Spring is nearly here and this is the time that our bodies detoxify themselves naturally. We live in a very toxic environment now and this puts an added burden on our bodies. Anything we can do to decrease our exposure to toxins will ease the load our bodies have to deal with.
Lend your body a helping hand by lightening the load on your body which will allow this process to have maximum benefit for you. Eat foods that are easy for your body to digest, such as vegetables and whole grains and keep to a minimum, foods that challenge your digestive system. Wheat, dairy and processed foods containing additives and preservatives are the most challenging for your body and can be a source of added stress that you don’t need.
The herb milk thistle is the most well researched supplement for protecting the liver which is our main detoxification organ and supports the production of new liver cells. Take 120 mg of silymarin 2-3 times per day. I would recommend taking this for at least a month and ideally for 3 months.
Artichoke and dandelion both promote the flow of bile from the liver. Bile helps remove toxins form the liver. They work particularly well when combined with milk thistle and can be found in some products in a combination.
Include some raw foods with your meal at least once a day, such as a side salad of some description, as they contain digestive enzymes which will help with the digestion process. There are many wonderful fresh vegetables to choose from with sprouted seeds being one of my favourite options as they are a fantastic source of digestive enzymes, have great protein content and taste great added to salads or stir fry’s. Start your day by drinking a mug of hot water with a slice of lemon in which will help to flush any toxins out of your system. These few simple tips will just give your body a little helping hand so that you get the most out of the process and feel better for it, enabling you to enjoy your life to the full.
